Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is excessive for developmental level, began during childhood, occurs in at least two important settings and causes clinically significant impairment in social, educational, occupational or other important functioning.
First principles
A neurodevelopmental disorder, not a failure of willpower
ADHD reflects a developmental pattern of self-regulation and attention that affects people differently. It is not explained by laziness, poor parenting or a single brain lesion, and there is no diagnostic blood test or scan. Use non-stigmatising, person-centred language and identify strengths as well as impairment.
