Fibroadenoma

A benign fibroepithelial breast lesion, usually presenting in adolescents or young adults as a smooth, firm, mobile lump; diagnosis depends on concordant clinical and imaging assessment, with biopsy or excision when the pattern is atypical.

Definition

A fibroadenoma is a benign fibroepithelial tumour of the breast containing proliferating epithelial and stromal tissue, usually arising as a well-circumscribed lesion in or around a terminal duct lobular unit.

A fibroadenoma is a benign biphasic fibroepithelial lesion

Fibroadenomas contain both epithelial and stromal tissue and are usually well circumscribed. Their hormone responsiveness explains why they commonly arise in younger people and may enlarge during pregnancy, breast-feeding or other hormonal states.
