Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral regurgitation is systolic leakage from the LV into the LA; chronic disease causes volume overload, while acute severe disease can cause pulmonary oedema.

Definition

Mitral regurgitation is systolic backflow from the LV to the LA. Primary MR arises from valve apparatus disease; secondary MR is caused by ventricular or atrial remodelling. Severity is determined by integrated clinical and echocardiographic assessment.

First principles

MR is systolic backflow

The mitral valve fails to coapt during systole, allowing blood to flow from the LV into the LA.
